Feelings of Helplessness
At one stage or another we all succumb to the feeling of helplessness in our lives. Whether it is a feeling of not being able in order to free of a great abusive family member or being trapped with a bad tornado, the organic animal behavioral instinct of your survival is obvious. " Celebration" written by Watts. D. Valgardson studies that instinct and the helplessness of situations that drives us to it.
Valgardson presents various circumstances that require success techniques in the storyline. One is the helplessness from the children inside the violent home atmosphere and the poverty that they can live in. When Eric and Mabel fought, " the kids hid within the Toronto sofa, lying completely still, producing no sound for hours at a time. " (61) The actions of concealing that the kids take when the parents are struggling, presents one of many animal predatory instincts that is displayed throughout the tale. Because of the weeknesses the children possess, they take out themselves out of sight and most probably, out of danger. Mabel is also carressed by feelings of confusion which is many apparent when she is exterior struggling with the cold and close to loss of life. Because of her exposure to the cold Mabel, " instinctively made her body no more than possible aid her warmness. " (64) Her automated reaction to place herself inside the fetal placement shows that her unconscious mind has already collapsed into a self-preservation mode, as like the kids do if they are threatened. Joshua, the prominent male in the story as well submits to frailty and powerlessness if he gives, " a sudden commence and his eye widened like, without warning, a dreadful vision was thrust upon him. This individual took one step toward the doorway, then ceased. " (69) His realization of the children still huddled under the couch drives a wave of despair and regret over his person. Knowing that they can do nothing and this as soon as the warmth from the oven dies the kids will most likely expire, he paces and staggers like a caged animal.
